Hey all,

Trying to track down a fluid leak yesterday...went to put a socket on a
sensor to see if it was loose...snap!...before I could even get the socket
on correctly! Leaving the canister of the sensor in the threaded hole and
the top half of sensor lodged in the socket. Ohhh *&(#&it!

So I have an interesting situation to say the least and need some help. I
believe this is the coolant temp. sender for the temp. gauge on the dash. It
is on the tranny side of the head, firewall side of the coolant hose flange,
Part # 027 919 501. Am I correct in identifying the sensor? Bentley doesn't
seem to mention this sensor?

Next question. Sticking out of the threaded hole in the head is a rubber
nipple. Has anyone else ever snapped a sensor, and what does it look like
inside? How do they work? I assume they have the same canister type of
construction as a oil temp. sender...small canister that is threaded into a
hole? Do they open up as the temp. raises to allow coolant into the
sensor?...so that if I drive the car now a slow leak of coolant will result?
Or is it still driveable, just no temp. guage...just monitor engine temp. by
watching oil temperature.

How best to attempt removal of the sensor canister? My thoughts...pull
rubber nipple out of hole with needle nose pliers, attempt to use a screw
extractor to cut into canister wall and back out? Any comments are welcome
and needed!

How much does a new temp. sender cost? Dealer only?

Thanks in advance,
Greg
