Oppinions on oil

I am buying a 90 GLI off of someone this week.  He has been using Redline oil 
in it........  I used Mobil 1 in my old car.  Is one better then the other?  
Should I stick with redline since thats all he used?  Is this a pointless 
question?   heh heh
