I have an 88 GTI 16V with ~180K and an AUG ('90 8v Jetta) tranny. It has a new
clutch (less than 1yr), rebuilt drive axles (less than 6 months), new motor
mounts (less than 1 year) and new hubs/wheel bearings (6 months or less).
Yesterday I was autocrossing the car and had it start vibrating under load
during acceleration immediately after the last launch. The vibration goes away
while coasting, but acceleration in any gear causes it to try to shake your
fillings out. Engine runs fine and has new airbox boots (so I don't think it is
that). When I checked the car one of the bolts that hold the inner cv joint to
the drive flange had backed out, I retightened it and the problem didn't go
away. This evening I plan on checking all the other bolts (i.e. tightening them
with a real tool in my garage instead of the teardrop cover tool in a parking
lot). Would a destroyed inner cv exhibit the same symptoms?

If it does turn out to be a tranny who has the best prices on a rebuild (2nd
gear syncros are gone also)?

Thanks,
Brian
