The ambiant temperature guage is in the drivers side fender. Around where the US sidemarkers are. My guess is that your has broken off and the wire occasionally touch eachother. Either tape the wires up so they don't touch eachother and forget about that function, or head on down to your VW parts dept. and get the parts you need. Probably a guage and the wiring harness.

Subject: Coolant level indicator and outside temp question
Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 06:26:26

Last night while driving home I was flicking throught the MFA and noticed
that I didn't get a reading for outside temp. Actually it never went to
that function. After oil temp, it just skipped the outside temp and went to
the time. Not sure what this is about.

Around the same time my indicator light went on. I pulled over and popped
the hood. Coolant level was perfect and I couldn't see any leaks anywhere.
I did notice a belt squeal when I turned. I checked my Bentley and it said
that a worn V belt could cause the light to go on.

Anyone have any ideas?
