I guess i'm being summoned! :)  Carroll Smith has a bunch of great books.
He wrote them quite a while back, but all the stuff there is still very
valid.  You'll want to look at "Drive to Win" and "Tune to win."  Since
you're probably not going to be engineering a race car from the ground up,
the other books won't help too much.

People have said it over and over, that "the best performance modification
you can make is to your driving"... and I didn't realize it until I went
autocrossing recently.  I've done big track racing here and there, but it
wasn't until I had that much competition on such a small course that I
realized how bad some of my habits were. :) Once you get to a level where
you're out there having fun, ride with as many people as you can, see how
they drive the track.  That's what helps me the most.
