It's usually about 2/3- 3/4 turn after the gasket touches. I was over tightening my filters at first being afraid it would leak but I don't have any problems. I also had problems if I took it to one of those quick oil changes places; they tend to overtighten as well. Good luck next time. :) HTH -Hubert 89 Jetta GLi
