Well, I figured I'd write a little bit about this years waterfest (even tho I am sure everyone has already seen numerous reports on the vortex). Good pics by the way Jim. A couple of things I noticed:
-Waaay too many A2 VR6 conversions. Every other GTI in the modded catagory has a VR6 stuffed under the hood. There was a Rallye Golf, but the G60 was pulled out and a VR6 Turbo was stuffed in. It's always nice to see an authentic rallye golf, but a little sad to see one of the last remaining ones hacked up with a different motor. There were some nice 16v's though, mostly a ton of Rocco 16v's. One guy (as shown by Jim's pics) had a carb'ed 2.1L 16v, claiming 190hp. And suprisingly, I only saw one 1.8t A2 (montana green 91 GTI), which was a very clean conversion with a passat motor. -In a weird way, this location was better than any of the previous locations. All of the other waterfest's were so close to NYC that they attracted everyone and anyone. Which is great thing I suppose, but not for true VW heads like us. This waterfest was all about the cars, whether it be dragging/autox/showing. There weren't too many 'punks' there, mostly everyone seemed somewhat knowledgeable about the dubs they were looking at. Of course, there were still those know-it-alls talking about changing their 'exhaust fluid' and 'flexcapacitors' for more horsepower. -The drag racing was great. I was expecting to see mostly younger kids in their new GTI 1.8t's and VR6's that Daddy has just bought them, but it was quite the opposite. There were more homebrew turbos, random transplants, and diehard racers then I expected. There was a diesel pickup running low 14's/high 13's. There was a quattro wagon running 14 flat, destoying corrado's and turbo jetta's. And I am sure everyone knows about the green a2 golf, who ran an 11.4 (i have it on video). I was expecting more cars running 15's, but it was certainly nice to see some fast cars. I only wish there was more of it, as there was only what seemed to be 30 cars dragging again and again. -Dyno was there, but seemed like an attention getter. Hearing a car do 130mph standing still, while redlining, draws a pretty big crowd. -Lastly, the drive there. I didn't caravan with anyone, but soon enough a few random dubs formed a caravan on I-80. First I found a black A4 GTI VR6 from Vermont, then a silver new Jetta, then an tan/gold 16v Rocco. Everyone drove a little over the limit, no racing, no weaving, etc. Those 30 people that got tickets deserved them, the cops were out in full force on rt 80 and people should have been smarter. My $0.02 on waterfest. VW content: I just bought knee bars off a guy on eBay for $1.55. Are these things heavy, or are there any reasons I should not put them on my car? They certainly look much better than the crap plastic thats in my car now. Denis G. 87 gti 16v http://come.to/veedubs ===== _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Denis P.
