Usually only happens with a bad lightening job where it's not balanced
correctly (nudge nudge).  It is a 8 or 10lb piece of steel spinning at up
to 7000 rpm, which can carry quite a wallop.  The whole thing isn't gonna
come through the firewall, just chunks of it... perhaps a piece the size
of a golf ball or something.  I've never heard of it happening on a vw,
but it DOES happen.  Check out dave baker's page on lightened flywheels

breakage towards the end.
