personally, given the financial resources, i'd spend the money on cylinder
head work instead.

yes, you will get a few extra CC of displacement, but you also decrease your
rod:stroke ratio; as someone else already said, this is bad for revs, and
the general reliability of your engine at higher RPMs.

in short, any increase in power resulting from displacement will be offset
by your new lower redline, unless you spend a pantload of money on the kind
of pistons/rods that can handle it, and even then you're still dealing with
a less-than-optimal setup...

not to mention that dropping $2-3k on a forged bottom end rebuild would be a
*very expensive* way to get those few extra hp, and you'd want an air
metering system that didn't involve a HUGE PLATE blocking the air path as
well (as there's no point in increasing displacement unless the rest of the
engine can handle and use the extra airflow)- ready to pony up another
couple grand on aftermarket EFI and tuning? (no, i am still not a fan of
motronic, or really any engine management system VW used on the A2s...)

so yeah. long story short, it can be done (from what i've heard), but it's
not the easiest or cheapest way of making power- there are (at least a few)
other areas of the 16v that need to be addressed first before increasing
stroke.

all of this is IMO, coffee just kicked in and i've been considering the
aspects of building a hardcore all-motor 16v, so i'd thought i'd ramble for
a while...
