I think you're right - the sport pressure plate makes a difference. 
BTW, in my car with a relatively stock motor (ITA doesn't allow for
many mods), I shift around 6500 which is where the torque band starts
to drop off.  I don't mind shifting at 7200 rpms if I'm forced to but
the extra rpms don't do much other than stress the components.
