Sounds like the transfer pump in the tank is shot. I had the same problem on my 8v GTI. It is an easy fix, less than 1 hour.

It will restart right away but the problem will reoccur minutes later. The next day it`s fine until it heats up again, It has never overheated. My mechanic says it could be the ignition module the computer the ..... I have replaced the "hall sender", the spark plus and wires the fuel pump (the expensive one) and I have redone all of the grounds in the engine bay ( I hope ) but nothing has worked. Please help Chris P.S the wife will sell it if it is not fixed she has been stuck twice and is really pissed of at it...
