I don't know if John Caldwell has already told you but his gti had the same
problem. Low rpm hesitation and backfiring then at about 3g or 3500 it
would just take off! Turns out the problem was a bad injector. We pulled
all the injectors and did the spray pattern test and one of them was
squirting like a squirt gun instead of the nice mist cone. I'd say test the
injectors if you haven't already.
