According to the information I have, originally VW established 60K as the
recommended interval to
change the 16V Timing belt. After a certain number of years VW found that
60K was too
long an interval (mainly due to belt failures) and revised their
recommendation
to 45K miles.

BTW, I had my Timing belt changed a few years ago at 30K miles. My mechanic
told me it looked like it did not need
to be changed but I figured that after 10 years it was time to change it.
