My '88 GLI did that to me. I put a starter(used) in it when I did a clutch,
drove for about 5,000 miles with no problems. Then one day, I went home for
lunch, came back out to the car, and the thing wouldn't start. I had already
smoked a starter with the screwdriver method, so I thought better of doing
that. I removed the main power wire, inspected it, and decided there was
nothing wrong with it. That was all it took. Re-attached it, got back in
the car, turned the key, and it fired right up. I don't understand why
everyone has problems with their ignition switches. I have owned 11 VWs, and
I have never replaced one.
