i wouldnt trust a number like that from a mechanic, let alone one with a
with the word "probably" in front of it.  your car shouldnt ping at 12
degrees unless something is wrong with it.  12 degrees BTDC is where you
start when tuning a non-motronic.  i had mine at (well, averaging at)
13-14.

yeah, you could, but timing lights are cheap and *extremely* easy to
operate.  there is no excuse not to have one if you plan on chaning the
timing.  its so touchy when you adjust the distributor that any
adjustment would be little more than a WAG.  besides, theyre one of THE
fundamental tools used to tune a 16v.
