yes , thats exactly it , years ago when I had a 8v  , myself and my neibour 
changed the timing belt , after we got the belt on and tensioned , the timing 
was so out the car didnt start , we didnt pay ANY attention to the inter. 
shaft. All we did was put no. 1 piston on tdc , lift out the dist.  , point it 
to no.1 on the dist. cap , re insert dist. and setup timing with timing light , 
15 minutes work.
