Yes, yes, and yes.  Also, the compressor (or seals around the
connections to it).

My evaporator failed.  I replaced it myself.  Email me if you want more

It is possible to test it without putting a leak detector in it.  When I
had mine tested, they just charged it with freon and used a "sniffer" to
find the leaks.  You can run the sniffer up inside the airbox from the
a/c drain tube on the bottom passenger side of the firewall inside the
engine bay.
