The $64 question is, did VW use the same exhaust and intake manifold bolt
patterns as the PL and 9A engines? If so, the cost of turbo charging a PL
or 9A 16V probably just got a lot cheaper. I would guess that a replacement
factory exhaust manifold will be less than an aftermarket one, not to
mention that the factory piece will be bullet proof (won't crack or distort
like a lot of aftermarket ones). And, I think the only turbo manifolds
available new these days are the Matrix one, and, maybe the EIP, which I
heard are really the old AMS manifolds. There are at least one or two
European made ones, but they're not being imported by anyone that I know of.
Also, if the intake manifold will fit the PL and 9A, then it should be
relatively easy to make a system that will pass emissions, as well.
I don't know if Dave Rodriguez made it on to the interim list, but Dave, if
you're here, keep your ears open for when VW releases replacement parts for
the Mk5 16V turbo cars, and let us kmow.
Wwwhhhiiisssttttllle POP, Wwwhhhiiisssttttllle POP... I can't wait!
