Anth, that is really weired.
I had a similar problem 2 years ago.
It was a hot summer day and I was pushing my 1.8l Jetta GTX and I heard a
sound like someone slapped their hand on the roof above the winshield.
I pulled over a block away and see what looks like a bullet hole through my
hood, right over the alternator.
As it turns out the Alt fan sheared into 3 pieces and one of them pearced
the hood, and one of those pieces landed between the alt belt and started
cutting away at it.

The same thing also happened to another guy I know.
