I think part of the moral of this story is McParts stores are only good for
oil and wiper blades. AAB or Virtual World for any serious parts.

The primary cause of alternator fan blades shooting through the hood is:
Overtightening the alternator belt.
If you know for sure that the alternator belt wasn't overtightened, then
your
alternator bracket/waterpump bolts may have broken, and shifted the whole
assembly, putting more stress on the belt. Ask me how I know...
