I forgot to tell you that the shifter ball doesn't necessarily have to be
from a MK2.
All 2l 8V MK3 Jettas and Golfs use the same shifter ball (shifting
assembly), so you may be able to get one from a used parts place.
I'd put money down saying that the orange bushing on the shift rod/main
shaft (passing through the firewall) is worn out and giving you extra
movement in your shifting.  Take a look.
