Like I said, try everything else that makes sense b/f ripping your head
apart.
In my situation, I had NO leaking. I had just had the heater core
replaced, so I knew it wasn't coming inside the cabin, mysteriously. After
the mechanic took the head apart, he said he couldn't find any visible signs
of coolant combustion. The cylinder chambers should be slightly brown,
according to him, if they are burning coolant. Mine weren't. However it
was burning it, it was very, very cleanly.

PS - Cost me $910 to have the head planed and rebuilt. That includes a
valve job, but not any other parts, which were supplied by me and purchased
thru AAB. I also had the guy do some "while you are in there" stuff, which
is included in that price, i.e. water pump, thermostat, etc.

Alot of times if you can't find the cause of your
coolant leak it's coming from the heater hoses. These
do age, and are rarely replaced. Ie, you have the
same ones the factory put in 13+ years ago. They're
cheap and fairly easy to replace...
