Adam, May want to start at the strutt bearing. To check it, jack the car up, take the wheel off and grab the spring, start pulling in any which way. If it moves it's bad and needs to be replaced. Next check the ball joints and tie rod ends, it you see a torn boot change them. Then go on to the Wheel bearing. If that still doesn't get it, take the control arm out and replace the bushings in them.
After that your steering should be super tight and your front end will be brand new. Someone suggested that you should jack up the front end and wiggle the wheel to see if there is any play. Well, I did and holy SH*T. I cant believe Ive been so ignorant. At least I parked this car 5 months ago and haven't driven it since due to the noise. I jacked the front end up and pushed and wiggled the drivers side wheel left and right with the steering locked and it was firm, then I grabbed the top of the wheel and pushed and pulled and it gave... about 1/4 inch either way and made kindof a clicking sound. I thought, "oh wonderful, just what I need!" so I figured while the car was up I would try the other side the same way. Grabbing the top and pulling and pushing I just about crapped myself when I noticed that it gave about 3/4" either way. never made a sound though. Had I kept driving on that, I probably would have less of a jetta then I do today! So my question for you is that, how many parts, and what parts do I have to replace to fix this. Apparently, its both sides.
