Well boys and girls,
I was able to track down the spontanious clunking sound.
It was the passenger side CV.

I tracked down the problem by taking the car to a big parking lot. I drove
the car in circles until it started clunking. Then I popped the hood, had
my bud sit in the driver's seat and **slowly** drive the car. I placed my
hand on top of the strutt (under the hood) and waited for it to clunk. When
it did, it was apparent that the problem was on the passenger side.

I got the car home and replaced the passenger side drive shaft and took it
for a test drive.
So far the sound is gone.

I think it's quite a coincidence that both (driver and passenger side) axles
went bad within the same month.
