Or at least the driver's side axle, it's the one that's most in the way. Not worth bothering with the passenger side, IMHO.

Hey Steve,
You're right its not 100% necessary to remove the axles but it does make it
easier to work under the car.  I've found that the half shafts just get in
the way and slow me down.  I've found it's best to take them out.
No biggie either way.

Why step 1.1, since it's not necessary to remove the half shafts from the
wheel bearing hub to get the transmission out?
