V1 one is King, but I've heard very good things about the Escort 8500
and IIRC it's 100 bux less than the V1.
One of the nicest features of the V1 is that it indicates front or
back on the display.
Good info here:

But be aware of the fact that they have a grudge against Valentine.
Not sure why, but they don't include them on the list.
I agree with the below: You might not need "the best." Find out what
kind of radar they run locally and decide if it's worth the extra
cost to get features you don't need locally but might when you
travel. I have a Cobra POS (that's not really the model name). It has
bailed me out on countless occasions and it was gift.
BUT, It's about 2 1/2 years old, the windshield mount gave up the
ghost a long time ago, and there's a short in it that causes it to
cut on and off somewhat randomly. If I was buying again, I wouldn't
get a Cobra just because it didn't hold up as well as it should have
even though when it works it works flawlessly.

In my experience it pays to first find out what guns are used in the areas
you primarily drive and buy according to ahat. I have a cheaper unit and it
has saved me countless times. it doesnt have laser, but that doesnt matter
because a) once it goes off oyure done anyway amd b) they dont use laser
here.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Laser/Radar Detectors - Take II
I really need to read my emails before hitting the *Send* button. Here is
the grammatically correct version of my previous email.

Anyone have a good 'net resource for learning about laser/radar
detectors?
Any BTDT stories on what to buy, what not to buy? Is the Valentine
One
still the only decent unit? Are there others that are close, but not as
pricey?
Any input is appreciated. I am willing to spend some cash on this
purchase. I know a $40 Wal-mart special is next to useless and a waste of
money.
Thanks,
Renard
