in every vw i have owned i had problems with the vapor barriers in the doors, i
had an 87 gli that used to collect about 3 inches of water behind the drivers
seat, if i forgot to check i would be able to hear it sloshing around when
driving. used to empty it out with a large cup

hey greg, something you can check. Same thing happened to my '89

For me it turned out to be the drain hoses from the sun roof. the run down
inside the headliner to a couple of drains under the dash, when it rains now an
then you dont notice it because the sunroof seal doesnt get soaked enough to
let water start seeping though, but around here it happens. (that, and when
your sunroof seal is 10+ yrs old, it wont hold back the water as well) My
problem started after I took my car in to have the heater core replaced and the
mechanics didnt re-attach the drain hoses to the correct spots so they would
drain outside.. they would drain into the car when it rained really hard. So
thats one thing to check.

Also, you might want to check the window seals on your car doors, if they are
letting enough water run down the window down into the door, it might be
pooling in the bottom of the door, which could then be seeping into the car
from there.

PS. About the Lic. Plate Holder.. I tore my shed up looking for it. I havent
gotten into that stuff since i moved about 2 years ago. Im starting to think
the plate holder may have gone away with my '89 when i sold it right before the
move. All i could find was a 16v Motronic Fuel Distributor and the rear plate
brackets, theres a couple of other places i might have stashed it, ill let you
know by tomarrow night.

Hope my tips might help.

  Hey all,

91 GLI, wet floor on passenger side only, front and back. Doesn't smell like
coolant, don't notice coolant level going down. NC car, just moved to
PacificNW in September, lots more rain in these parts.

So where are the usual suspect locations to check? Window rubber, evaporator
tray, sunroof?

If the evaporator tray, how to clean if dirty? Can you get to this from under
the car to at least poke something in the drain? I figure the easiest way to
check this is run defrost or AC on a dry spot of pavement and check for water
draining?

  All comments, ideas needed.

  Thanks,
  Greg
