With the car in the air, the wheels will continue to turn regardless of the clutch engagement - can't remember exactly why but it has something to do with the parasitic power. The only real test of whether the clutch is disengaging is to put the car in neutral and step on the brakes - if the engine stalls, the the clutch isn't disengaging.
