Im hoping its something like this. It is a new clutch and pressure plate. All
bolts were torqued and I used loctite so Im puzzled. Unfortunately today and
maybe tomorrow I have to replace my tarp covered carport as it just in last two
weeks has falling apart. But soon I will push the gti back inside and hoist and
lower the engine and pull the tranny and find out. I'll let you know what I
find.
              Take care,

It could be that the pressure plate is broken! I had one break. I thought
the engine had thrown a rod or something it was so bad. I was under the car
turning the motor over by hand and traced the noise to the PP.

Hello, (89gti 16v)
If you remember I was having poor running trouble then its just wouldnt
start at all. After a few days after taking apart the fuel distributor was
once again in business. Seemed that either the plunger was stuck or maybe a
bad connection or one of the two wiring plugs wasnt making a good
connection. Anyway after taking out the fuel pump and resevoir only to find
that was not the problem ,with the fuel distributor is where I ended up.
------------
Car was running but couldnt get it to pass motor vehicle emissions test.
Took 3 different days (6 test) and after retarding the timing enough it went
thru.
Put new inspection sticker on and was feeling relief that finally progress
was being made.
Riding home that friday morning from work at 2:00am. Gti cut off -tried
restart bad sounding when turned over. I towed it home.
This is where its been since. Not sure of the extent of damage. Didnt seemed
to loose any fluids (or any mixing)
Flywheel is loose??
So I need to take the tranny out to get to the flywheel ofcourse then see
what Ive got. This week i will get on this.
In the meantime I purchased a 97 gti 2.0 hopefully to add a little gti
driving to my day.
Would have rather had a VR6 but this is what I ended up with.
What can I do to add a little go to this 2.0l 4cyl.?
Thank you all for your help along the way with this project.
Sorry took 2.5 weeks to give an update.

  Hello all,
I never did find any vacuum leaks even though it sure seemed there should
have been.
As I had said a few days ago while I was working on the car I realized the
oxygen sensor wires has came loose and fallen against the exhaust and melted
thru so replaced the plugs. I knew the car had been running 1.5 years ago
when I took it off the road.
Anyway unplugged the oxygen sensor and all hesitation and bog entirely
disappeared. Now it does idle up and down(maybe even more than before)but
runs pretty good otherwise.
I still have not ruled out fuel delivery problems and I am planning to
replace (the under car) fuel reservoir assembly
due to it being extremely rusted and if there isnt leaks yet there may
very well be soon.
  My questions:
The oxygen sensor on our car is this a dealer only item?
I remember in the past the mention of an interchangeable sensor from a
domestic car..does anyone remember anything about this? I shudder at the
thought of buying this from the VW dealer.
another question.....I noticed my air stabilizer is running(vibrating) but
it clicks often, sya every few seconds??Is this normal? Or is the result of
my disconnected O2 sensor?
Last question....the complete fuel reservoir are they interchangable say
from a 90 jetta (my gti is 89).
        Thanks again for your help
                            Mike

  Subject: [a2-16v-list] running problems

  Hello,
Have an update on my clutch/tranaxle project. Wednesday I got the car
off
the jackstand after doing a few remaining odd things. Took for a ride and
clutch seems fine. New problem car was idling up and down ( I had already
cleaned throttle body etc.) so I replaced the air idle stabilizer with one
I
had lying around. Seems to idle okay once it warms up about 3 or 4
minutes.
This is the deal....when it first starts (even though it will stall if I
let
it) when I give it gas it revs up normal...after just 5 or 6 minutes when
I
give it gas it bogs down. Now as I said after 5 or 6 minutes it will stay
running but when I give it gas it starts to rev a little then bogs down
almost immediately. So at first wont stay running but will rev fine. After
5
or so minutes it will idle but bogs down terrible. If I work with it a bit
and give it continued pumping it catches and as it works above say 2000
rpm
and will rev great then (until I let itgo down into lower rpms...then same
thing all over. One more thing..I have to sometimes floor it to get it to
start unless its cold (then it starts right up).
I cant find any vacuum leaks. Changed the fuel filter while I was under
there. Wires are almost new. I believe timing is pretty close.Car did sit
for about 1 year and 3 months.
I would appreciate any ideas anyone might have.
            Thank you
                 Mike Ingram
