Unfortunetaly, there is no dipstick.

There is probably a better way but this is how I do it.

With the car on level ground, I remove the drivers side front wheel. (Obviously
you have to jack it up to get the tire off, but lower it while on the jackstand
until the car is once again level following tire removal)

Behind the drivers side wheel, there is a large 17mm(?) hex plug on the tranny
casing. Unscrew this large plug.
If proper oil level is present, then oil should just drip out of this hole
while the transmission is level. If it is not, then the level is low. You can
use a funnel with a plastic tube to pour additional oil into this same hole, or
as some have advised, remove the speedo cable on top of the tranny casing and
pour in oil from there until oil flows from the hole in the side.

I'm sure others will have better suggestions.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Check tranny fluid

Just wondering how to find any kind of dipstick or bolt to unscrew to check
the transmission fluid. I havent have the tranny serviced in about 12 months
and the shifting is getting a little stiff. I wanted to take a look at the
color & level of the fluid, but I cant figure out where to look. Most stuff
has been pretty straighforward since i started doing things myself. but till
now ive never done anything regarding the tranny.

Looking down under the hood there is a large greenish inverted hex nut
screwed into the top of the tranny, closer to the block. Is that it? I
havent touched anything yet.

The car is a 1991 Jetta GLi.
Thanks for the input. -Adam
