The Mythbusters covered this myth and declared it "busted" FWIW. They mounted a rocket engine with equivalent thrust to what was supposedly used in the myth and mounted it to the back of a car they set up for radio control and drove the thing while flying in a helicopter. Way cool... but I don't think they ever manage to get it going very fast... like 130mph or something.
