Great!!  Now I have the name that eluded my feeble brain but also enough info 
that I can probably DIY without too much effort.  Now I just have to source a 
spare console - with as much VW junk as I have lying around, I can't believe I 
don't have one of those...

Yes, It was the Votex console. 

The suggestion was made to fabricate your own. That is basically what the Votex 
console was all about. 

I prefer the additional guages in the slot where the stock radio resides. Its 
much easier to see than down at the console.
