I've had a 2001 Golf 1.8t since new. It was very reliable and failures were do to wear and tear from driving and living in upstate NY. The engine was very reliable. Oil analysis showed no signs of wear at 80k. Now in excess of 100k and still looks and runs good. Ex-wife now has it and I would love to get a replacement mk4. This time a tdi to go with the Touareg. The gli restoration is currently a stalled project.
My opinion on the overheating mk2 is it could be the water pump. I have a NOS water pump with the cast impeller I could let go.
