I put a brand new cap/rotor on the car a couple days ago. Yesterday I removed the cap to have a look and found the rotor had torn up the contact points on the cap. There was metal dust all over the place in there. The rotor was on there solid and had not come loose. I only drove the car a total of maybe 15 minutes since installing the cap. The distributor shaft seems to have a very slight amount of play but I can't see how it would move enough to cause the rotor to hit every distributor contact.
