I assume you're referring to the bluish/grey Recaro VW Seats.

Im sure I did this in a way that would make any knowledgeable VW enthusiast
cringe with disgust --but here is what I did to clean them.
When I pulled my pair of Recaros from the salvage yard, the seats were the
typical dust and dirt covered as you would find in any salvage yard. Judging
from the interior and the cigarette burn in one of the seats, I knew the
previous owner was a smoker.

So to clean them, I first vacuumed then and then I wiped them down with a rag
dipped in dishwashing soap and water. Not very scientific. I tried it on the
back side first to determine if it would damage the fabric, distort color, or
molest the shape of the seat. Not too much water because I didn't want to
distort the fabric or get the internal foam soggy. Just enough to work out the
stains and the smell. Then I vacuumed them dry with a shop vac and allowed them
to air dry in the sun. My method successfully removed the smokey odor and
removed a few of the stains that were in the fabric. When they dried, they were
consistent color and the fabric was not damaged.

It was dawn dishwashing liquid. The blue stuff

That was my ignorant method of cleaning.
