Sorry, my mistake. Try
place=town {name '${name}, ${is_in:state}' | '${name}'} [0x...
and
place=village {name '${name}, ${is_in:town}, ${is_in:state}' |
'${name}'} [0x...
You could make the latter more sophisticated using
place=village {name '${name}, ${is_in:town}, ${is_in:state}' |
'${name}, ${is_in:town}' | '${name}, ${is_in:state}' | '${name}'} [0x...
This uses the town tag if the state tag is missing, or the state tag
if the town tag is missing, or if both town and state are missing it
just uses the name tag.
> Yes this works, but,
>>>
>> place=town {name '${name}, ${is_in:state}' | name '${name}'} [0x...

>>> name=z village
>>> place=village
>>> is_in:town: x town
>>> is_in:state = y state
>>>
>>> would be:
>>> z village, x town, y state
>>
>> place=village {name '${name}, ${is_in:town}, ${is_in:state}' | name
>> '${name}'} [0x...
> same problem as above
