I think I managed to migrate the changes in the overview branch into the
current 
trunk version.
Attached is the patch, the compiled binary is available here:

I have added two options:
--x-overview-add-lines 
--x-overview-add-polygons
If you add both, you get the result as with the branch version. If prefer
adding only the polygons
to see the shape of the continent.

By the way, the full img file for Africa has ~ 1.3 Mb.

So, feel free to play with it and suggest changes.
