I agree with you. Only it didn't work for me. When I did DEM with ratios
4 for subsequent layers, Mapsource showed shadings only when displaying
layer 0. I switched to ratio 2 and Mapsource showed shading for all
zooms. Maybe there were other reasons, but I didn't tested much.
I have published a map with DEM, with configuration, that I found
satisfactory:
