The crash happens because a tile contains > 65536 subdivisions. This limit could
be tested earlier and a better message output.

Possibilities are:

The tile really needs all of them, in which case you need to re-split with a
smaller value of --max-nodes

The style and options cause a lot more map data than you are expecting; I'd be
concerned with --add-pois-to-lines [default =all]. 

The splitting logic is generating more subdivisions than necessary due to some
unusual boundary condition.

Another question: Do you attempt to name your tiles such that you can see that
they correspond to the area you are interested in (ie Croatia) and will be
merged with significant OSM map data. It could be that you have tiles with
contours only.
