Each piece of the raised ridge along an alligator's back and tail is
a scute. An image search on Bing for "Alligator Scute" pulls up some
good examples.
I'm trying to do some shorter works this year; just decided to divide
a possibly lengthy story into digestible segments so I might actually
get more than one or two stories written this year.
