Follow-up Comment #5:
Actually "gmake maintainerclean" is the best way to reset the
source code to its original state. But you will find that after
"./configure --enable-gui=newgui1" a maintainerclean will remove
too much files so compiling GTK1 newgui1 again will fail. This is
the only place this happens, otherwise maintainerclean works well.
So the safest way, which I am using here myself, is to have a
clean CVS checkout and copy this dir somewhere else for
patching/compiling.
