I took your bug report as opportunity to update the Ubuntu compile guide:

I made a clean install of Ubuntu 6.06 and could compile MLDonkey without
problems. Please check the Wiki page and use a CVS
checkout into a clean dir. If you still get errors I suppose some
problems with your Ubuntu install or some Ubuntu packages.
Unfortunately I do not have x86_64 hardware so I can not test it
but I know from other users that MLDonkey can be compiled on that
hardware.
