I have already done this, a little web server that links to the Mlt ruby swig 
library. It is incredibly simple with maybe 10 endpoints and consumes/produces 
JSON. I just took another look at Melted because my C has gotten to a level 
where I can read quite a bit but still am not very comfortable making patches. 
I also am taking another look because I really like the simplicity of the MLT 
XML API.

The problem is that I have a very dynamic playlist and I cannot think of a 
model that fits into how Melted handles playlists. Even if I split my clips up 
into smaller groups, if I need some kind of transition on those edges, it seems 
like I am out of luck. The closest solution I can come up with is maybe 
breaking clips up into groups of n time and having the list locked until n * 2 
or n * 3. Then just clearing the list and appending the next xml block after 
editing is done.
