No.  It displays the first frame in the file, and nothing more.  However, in the
xterm where I typed 'melt in.AVI' it does display the frame numbers as if
the file is being correctly.  But the video on the screen isn't correct.

I can try that.  What are the options?

Yes for mplayer and ffmpeg.  Haven't tried vlc.
