These modules are largely redundant with the avformat module and has code that requires maintenance and has dependencies. They made sense in a time when DV was widely used as you could have a MLT tool without some of the patent license baggage of avformat. During that time, it was also nice to be able to work with Vorbis files alongside DV. However, the times have changed, DV is not as relevant, and I see little demand for DV+Vorbis only builds of MLT. Deprecation means the code is no longer maintained and scheduled for removal in a 1.0 release.
P.S. At this point, the 1.0 release is largely dependent upon completing conversion to mlt_anim and mlt_rect, completing yml documentation, fixing known nasty bugs like Janne found recently, and resolving all Coverity high and medium warnings. That might be about a year.
