On OS X, use MacPorts or Homebrew. I maintain the MacPort port, and you
might have tried it and been affected by this bug for which I recently
submitted a patch: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/46798

I do know anything about the status of the Homebrew formula.

To use Shotcut's melt, which does not suffer this problem:
just run /Applications/Shotcut.app/Contents/MacOS/melt
