Well, the first MLUG was quite successful and obviously informal. It was
interesting to see some of the faces behind the email addresses at last.
After finding that Stables ("open tomorrow from 8:00 onwards") was well and
truly closed we crossed to another bar across the road. Over several rounds
of beer and chocolate nuts, Martijn and Stephen compared geek gadgets while
the conversation covered topics such as Maltese keyboards, some ongoing and
planned projects on Linux, the installfest, Happy Christians, getting
ordinary people to know more about Linux, and Kama Sutra - not necessarily in
that order.
One of the topics which, I think, everyone agreed upon is that we need to get
the general public to know more about Linux. Personally I feel that the
installfest would be more successful if more people knew about Linux. I
suggested that perhaps the best way to do this is to get in touch with the
producers of programmes like "eZone" - which is a regular program dedicated
to computers - and see whether we can produce an episode on Linux. Such a
program could dispel lingering ideas about Linux being difficult, etc.
Another suggestion was to use papers and magazines, such as the Times' weekly
IT supplement, and other magazines. More ideas would be welcome, and if any
of you have contacts we could get in touch with, share these on the list.
