Instructions to unsubscribe from this list at the end of the message

Try the following:
Open a terminal window, and type the command:
setxkbmap mt
..or, if you have a US keyboard
setxkbmap mt_us

This should load the Maltese keyboard map. Then, try typing in KWord or KMail. 
Make sure that in KDE's country/language settings, you select iso-8859-3 as 
the default character set.

If you use KDE3 you won't have to do the latter, since it uses unicode 
throughout.
