Elvio, I agree with you 100%,

Not only is the mailing list empty, but also is the website. I've
contributed an article which has been front page on the site for months!
Really, it's good - but not that good ;)

I think that what this mailing list, and the LUG needs is more
enthusiasm, as Elvio pointed out perfectly. This list used to be great!
This was at the time when the LUG was relatively new, and I remember
receiving countless messages per week from the list, so much so I had to
create a folder just for that!

Maybe the reason the list is MUCH less active is the negative criticism
that the Linux spellchecker, and unfortunately our mentor Ramon Cascha
has received. Ramon used to be able to give life to this group, he was
the driving force behind it, but maybe the criticism was too much.

I've been reading the book 'Rebel Code' by Glyn Moody. It talks about
all the struggles several Linux and Open Source software had to face,
such as the speed test when compared to Microsoft Windows NT. However,
all these projects had one thing in common - NEVER SAY DIE, and that's
exactly what this group should do.

We need initiative - I'm sure the interest exists. Several of my
low-budget (including me ;) ) fellow students at Junior College are very
interested when I talk about Linux, I even mentioned it in my Computer
Studies presentation - and they were greatly enthusiastic about the
subject. During that talk, I referred them to the Linux User Group.
It's a pity that a week later they came on to me and said, "Simply put,
that group's dead".

The Linux community in Malta needs to take a firm stand, and assert
itself in Malta - showing the people that there is a correct, free and
far better alternative to Windows.

Indeed, this mailing seems too much quiet! I've been subscribed to quite
a while, but I never read something other than how to configure a modem
;)

I'm sure there are people subscribed to this list who are more than just
getting to know the OS, as I know a few myslef, and they are probably
subscribed to this list too. I've been a happy linux user for a couple
of years, and it's good to know that there are others in this country.
We've been way too quiet - but something lately got me here to ask all
of you to become more active.

I can't hear more about e-govt and Microsoft dominating the country from
the roots of the government to students. Public services and
corporations, schools, libraries. While all foreign countries switching
to other open source alternatives, we are happily negotiating with MS to
bring them here. Will parts of my tax now start to contribute to MS
software licensing?

And why, I ask, when there are so many alternatives which are just as
good (or better)? And why Mr. Austin Gatt stats that having the MS
sources let local companies "export" software? You might read more in
this article:

You might also search for the related story on /.

Should this group be more active? I'm more than happy to help or start
any new projects. At least those with some experience can move ahead -
and get more people to join in and learn. I'm happy to see people trying
new distributions, but linux.org.mt lacks any projects or articles for
the experienced user.

I welcome any thoughts or comments on this.

Regards,
Elvio
