Hello Alan,

probably what the technical support meant was that the ISP did not offer =
support for Linux, not that the modem is not supported by Linux... =
Setting Linux to DHCP should work fine and without problems. Even for =
those experimenting PPP on ADSL which is far cooler (and simpler) than =
PPTP, should set it to DHCP.

I think that is a slight problem. Since you use a cable modem I assume =
you're with OnVol and the make is Toshiba Pcx2000 or Pcx2500. I had the =
same problem, Toshiba modems are not supported in linux and there are no =
drivers for them. I contacted Toshiba and told me that they do not offer =
support on their modems for Unix or Linux. However they also told me =
that it can work however through other means, which where too technical =
for me to understand since I am also a newbie in Linux!=20
  =20
  Good Luck!=20
  =20
And if it works plz drop a line ;)

    hi all,
    =20
i am a beginner to linux. while we have linux servers running at =
work we dont get much chance ot mess with them, for obvious reasons that =
we all know.
    =20
i have installed RH8 on my pc at home on a partition of its own. =
hope i will find help from you guys. my aim is to switch to linux =
completely at home and perform better at work.
    =20
    my first question:
    =20
i have cable internet at home. on booting up linux the system gets =
stuck on the "Bringing up interface eth0". The only way to go past it is =
to switch the cable modem off. I dont go much further though. from the =
system settings > network configuration i try to activate the device, =
after switching on the modem, but i am stuck there.
    =20
any help is very much appreciated
    =20
    regards
    =20
    joseph
